VSF Travel: The Goods Shed, Canterbury

fresh picked VSF Travel: The Goods Shed, Canterbury

Like to travel?  I do.  VSF Travel is a series where I share my favorite finds from around the world.

The Goods Shed is a farmers market / cafe / restaurant in Canterbury, England.   Yes, I love markets.  They’re my first stop when I travel.  But with the increasing popularity of the local food movement, some “local” farmers markets aren’t so local.

(Have you seen lemons or bananas in your local farmers market?  Are they “local”?  Not if you live in England.)

The Goods Shed is local, seasonal food at its best.  They have food that is picked fresh from the local fields that same day!  They also have a butcher, bottle shop, sundries area, cheeses, bread, preserves and the best part … a restaurant and cafe that use ingredients from the farm shop!

VSF Travel: Moscow

moscow stbasil VSF Travel: Moscow

Market stalls filled overflowing with pickled vegetables.  Deliciously dark rye bread.  European-style cafes with good coffee and tooth-achingly sweet desserts.  Endless traffic.

Women walking their daily commute in 4 inch heels.

“Asian” restaurants that serve Georgian food, not Chinese.

And my favorite VSF find… herbal tea, everywhere!

I recently spent a few days in Moscow, and was captivated by the contrasts of the city.  Here are a few of my favorite finds.

How the French got it right.

IMG 3626 How the French got it right.

My recent weekend visit to Toulouse reminded me of how the French have got it right with food.

In my experience living in France, the French seem to eat better, and have a healthier relationship with food than we do in the US or the UK.  There are lots of reasons for this, and most of it is cultural.  In France, everyone cooks.  It’s normal to cook.  It’s not a fancy, specialist skill, or something you save for the weekends.  I’ve written before about why you should learn to cook, and I really believe this is one of the biggest things you can do to improve your health. Eating well in Toulouse

I recently spent a long weekend in Toulouse, in southwest France visiting a good friend.  Besides making stuff, creativity, traveling and cooking, one of my obsessions is France.  I used to live in Paris and have never gotten enough of the French lifestyle – especially it’s emphasis on real, whole, good foods.

I love the availability of markets throughout France, even in small villages.  Markets where you buy seasonal, local produce, just because that’s how it’s done, not because you’re posh or fancy or a hippie.  It’s just what people do.  It’s normal. [Read more...]

Inspiration: Vintage Pharmacy Finds

Just a few more pictures from my trip to Zagreb, Croatia.  You can see the central market pictures here.

While wandering around, we came across the Black Eagle Pharmacy, which is the oldest pharmacy in Zagreb.  Their window display was full of vintage apothecary ideas.  Here you can see a mortar and pestle for crushing up herbs, some old advertisements, and scales for weighing the products.

Inspiration: Market in Zagreb, Croatia

One of the perks of living in the UK is quick trips to Europe!  Recently I spent a few days in Zagreb, Croatia, and as usual, was on the lookout for Vintage Savoir Faire inspiration.  I also have a weakness for markets – which although Zak thinks they are ‘all the same’ – they’re really not!  Sure they all have the basic vegetables, but every country’s markets have their own personality.

Zagreb had a huge central market with around 100 different stands of fruit, veg and flowers. I was not expecting it to be so big in such a small city.
